Gloucester Police Cracking Down On Off Road Vehicles

Posted: Updated:
GLOUCESTER TWP., N.J. -

Police in Gloucester Township said off road vehicles have started appearing more and more on their streets lately, creating a major safety hazard for the community.

Police said they started cracking down two weeks ago when the weather started to warm up because that's when it becomes a bigger problem.

They've already issued 12 citations.

"It's a little irritating, especially at night," Barry Robinson said.

"Especially dinner time and the weekends. It's really bad on weekends," Anton Antanuk said.

And police said they are dangerous.

"They don't have safe operating practices and we typically find them riding on our streets illegally in traffic, and without helmets," Captain Anthony Minosse said.

Minosse said off-roading is also against the law in most of Gloucester Township.

He said one of the most common places for illegal ATVs and dirt bikes is a wooded area across from Camden County Community College.

"There's a trail going that way, there's a trail going that way," Antanuk said

That's near where Antanuk lives.

"They really rev their engines and you get one or two and the next thing you know you get six or seven or a dozen going by," he said.

We even heard what could have been a dirt bike while we were talking to him.

Robinson said he's been dealing with what he calls a nuisance for 8 years.

He said it's the worst during the summer.

"It's usually Monday through Sunday, in the afternoon, and it goes to the evening and sometimes at night," Robinson said.

But as loud as they sometimes roar, it seems they vanish, without a peep.

"The cops usually come but it's normally too late by then," Antanuk said.

Violators can face a small fine and have their vehicle impounded.

However, there isn't a lot police can do to keep those impounded ATVs from showing back up on the streets.
