Are You A Workaholic?

They're the first one in in the door each morning.

The last one to leave each night.

The ones seems to work longer - and harder - than anyone else.

A lot of us work long hours, but workaholics really struggle to call it quits.

Emory University/Grady psychologist Dr. Nadine Kaslow, Ph.D., says compulsive workers are often perfectionists who live for work. Dr. Kaslow explains, "They prioritize work over their relationships, over their health, over their leisure time. Work is the most important thing.”

Even when workaholics are off, they’re still sending texts to coworkers, wrapping up assignments and making phone calls. Kaslow says, “They’re on vacation, but they spend half the day every day on their email."

Some people over-work because they love their jobs. Work makes them happy. But Kaslow says many workaholics don’t enjoy their work, it makes them anxious and exhausted. But. they pull long hours because they’re afraid of failing or being fired.

The problem with this non-stop job overload? You burn out. Kaslow says, “If you feel anxious and depressed and stressed-out constantly about your work, that's very concerning to me."

And long work hours are tough of relationships. Kaslow says if your spouse, or partner or friends are complaining you work too much, you probably do.

So, how do you dial it back? Kaslow says start by making a “to-do” list for non-work events. Pencil in dinner with your spouse.

Schedule that tennis game you’ve been putting off. Writing down and these “non-work” commitments is important because, Kaslow explains, “Workaholics do what their calendar says."

Also, set some boundaries. Commit to going home, no matter what, at the same time each day. If you shift ends at five, leave no later than six, even if you still have things to do. Let them wait.

Make that afternoon or morning run – or walk – or dinner with friends - a priority, not something you leave to chance. And take it slowly. You’re not going to change overnight. But you can start taking baby steps to a better work-life balance.
