A 16-year-old Connecticut high school junior was killed hours before her class was to hold their prom.

The suspect, also a junior, was arrested as a suspect in the killing.

It happened at Jonathan Law High School in Milford shortly after 7 a.m. Police say that the teen was stabbed in a hallway during first period.

The victim was identified as Maren Sanchez. The school superintendent described her as very well respected and liked at the school. She was an athlete, in the National Honor Society and managed other clubs at the school.

"We are obviously devastated by the loss of one of our students, Maren Sanchez," Superintendent Elizabeth Feser said at a news conference. "She was a 16-year-old junior, vibrant, very, very involved in Jonathan Law High School, an incredible contributor, someone who was loved and respected."

Police said that the girl suffered cuts and stabs to her facem neck, and chest. Police say staff members and paramedics performed live-saving measures on the girl, but she later died at Bridgeport Hospital.

Students described an emotional scene where people were crying as police and paramedics swarmed the school.

Several sources told The Connecticut Post that the stabbing was over Sanchez refusing to go to the prom with the attacker. At the news conference, the police chief said that detectives are investigating that angle, but said that it could just be a rumor. School officials postponed the prom after the incident.

Authorities charged the suspect with murder as a juvenile. The suspect is being held at a medical facility and is expected to be arraigned on Monday. For now, the teen's name is not being released. Police said the Milford Superior Court will determine if the suspect will be tried as a juvenile or an adult.

Police said that the attack was an isolated incident and that other students were safe. The school had an early dismissal after the incident. School officials hoped to reopen the school on Monday.
