Special Olympics: CEO T.J. Nelligan

NEW JERSEY (MYFOXNY.COM) -

As chairman and CEO of the 2014 Special Olympics USA Games, T.J. Nelligan is one of its biggest supporters. But his role is much more than a job. For him, it's personal.

T.J.'s work with Special Olympics began because of his role as Sean's father. Sean has an intellectual disability.

Beyond sports, Sean is living the dream of working with his best friend Bobby in T.J.'s restaurant, the Montville Inn in Montville, New Jersey.

In addition to supporting each other on the job, these "brothers" will cheer each other on this year at the 2014 Special Olympics USA Games being held in New Jersey. T.J. led the charge to bring them to the Garden State.

"It's been a 4 year process of raising the money, putting all the world class venues in place, getting all the athletes in place in the 16 different sports they're going to compete in together," he says. "Now we're coming down the home stretch and we're really excited. It's going to be a world class event."

More than 3,500 athletes will compete this year.

Sean will be in the bocce ball competition. Bobby will be in track and field.

The games give T.J. a chance to show what can happen when Jersey Strong welcomes those that make it stronger.

The Boys and Girls Club of Newark seems like the last place you'd expect to find the daughter of hip hop royalty. But when it comes to inspiring young girls, Angela Simmons, daughter of Rev. Run of Run DMC, believes in the old adage "each one, teach one." While it may seem like she had a silver spoon in her mouth, she knows the importance of giving back.

Several beaches on the New Jersey and New York coastlines are open to visitors but closed to swimming because of high surf and dangerous rip currents. The National Weather Service has issued a High Surf Advisory and Rip Current Statement for the area beaches because of the effects of Hurricane Cristobal, which is expected to track south and east of the Jersey shore through Thursday.
