Pope who visited Detroit to be canonized

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) - Two popes will be canonized this weekend in Vatican City, Popes John Paul II and John XXIII. Pope John Paul II visited Detroit nearly 40 years ago.

Monsignor Stanley Milewski, Chancellor Emeritus of Orchard Lake Schools, recounts knowing Pope John Paul II. He says he has regarded the pope as a saint "since the Lord took him from us."

Pope John Paul II is the only pope to have ever visited Detroit.

The celebration of the dual canonization will begin Saturday night at Orchard Lake St. Mary Schools campus with a procession. Sunday, the ceremony will be screened there live beginning at 4 a.m.
