Local teen wins national service award

Posted: Updated:
MARIETTA, Ga. -

A Marietta teenager is trying to end homelessness in his community. And his work is gaining national attention.

Eighteen-year-old Colin Humble is a senior at George Walton Comprehensive High School.

Along with being a standout athlete and honor student, Humble has dedicated the last two and a half years to helping the homeless.

He and his brother started a ministry called "My Brother's Keeper". He and dozens of other volunteers, pack bags with food and toiletries to hand out to the homeless twice a month. They meet in the basement of his church to sort the supplies.

Colin says, the mission goes beyond handing out free goods. "Our goal in what we do is to treat the immediate needs, so they [the homeless] can focus on the long term needs that they need to do, like relationships, getting a job, getting back on their feet, and dealing with drug addictions," said Colin.

Colin also collects and repairs bicycles for the homeless and serves hot meals to them.

He says he's learned a lot about homelessness since starting the outreach program. "It's a lot more prevalent than I ever imagined."

His passion for serving the homeless started when he was 8. He was on his way to a football game with his dad.

"We saw a bunch of homeless men huddled around one of those metal fire bins and they were trying to keep warm in the cold January weather," said Colin. From that point forward, he was committed to service. The ministry, that started by serving 30 homeless people, now serves 70 or 80 every time they distribute the bags.

"It's not a lot of the same faces, which we're hoping means that we're getting people out of this cycle of homelessness," said Colin.

His dad, Clark says, he couldn't be more proud. "The innocence and persistence of youth is tremendous and you know what, one person really can make a difference."

Colin's commitment to service has earned him national attention.

He's received a number of awards and scholarships recently.

He was awarded the Prudential Spirit of America Community Service Award for the state of Georgia.

And he's been given an extremely generous "community service" scholarship to Notre Dame, which is where he'll attend school in the Fall.

Colin has already appointed a Sophomore at his high school to take over the ministry once he goes off to college.

We already know about some of the fees our banks charge -- the monthly fee, the overdraft charge, out-of-network and minimum balance fees. That's standard stuff. But did you know that the average checking account has 30 fees attached?
