Sky Harbor International airport was experiencing departure delays of 45 to 60 minutes due to the Federal Aviation Administration issuing a ground stop at Los Angeles International Airport, McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas and Salt Lake City International Airport.
By 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, planes were allowed to take off at Los Angeles International Airport and departure delays at Sky Harbor were at 15 to 20 minutes.
Airport spokeswoman Nancy Castles said Wednesday afternoon that the FAA had put a "ground stop" on departures. Arrivals were still being accepted.
Los Angeles International is the nation's third-busiest airport.
Statement from the FAA: "The FAA's Los Angeles Center air traffic control facility experienced technical issues and stopped accepting additional flights into the airspace managed by the facility for about an hour. Some flights were diverted and the agency issued a nationwide groundstop for flights heading into the airspace managed by the center. The agency is gradually restoring the system."
Sky Harbor Airport's Julie Rodriguez stated, "Flights to Los Angeles are delayed due to computer issues in Los Angeles. All flights from Phoenix Sky Harbor to Los Angeles are being held in Phoenix at this time. Those picking up a passenger arriving from Los Angeles should check flight status before coming to the airport."
15 flights that were due to land in Los Angeles have been diverted to Phoenix Sky Harbor.
