More Chicago students to get free college courses

Posted: Updated:

CHICAGO (AP) - More than 3,000 Chicago Public Schools students will get to enroll in free college courses at the City College of Chicago beginning this fall.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel, public schools CEO Barbara Byrd-Bennett and City Colleges Chancellor Cheryl Hyman announced the expansion on Tuesday.

The mayor's office says in 2011 there were 300 seats available for CPS students to take college courses at one of the seven City Colleges of Chicago.

For the 2014-2015 school year 3,100 students will be able to earn credits that may be applied to a City Colleges degree program or transferred to another college or university.

In a statement, Emanuel says the program is an important part of the city's goal to ensure every student is "100 percent college ready and 100 percent college bound."
