Christopher Plaskon, 16, was silent as he made his first court appearance to face a murder charge as an adult. He is accused of stabbing to death his classmate Maren Sanchez, 16, in the stairwell of their high school in Milford, Conn., one week ago.

"He's still displaying signs of active psychosis so we have a lot of work to do moving forward," said Richard Meehan, Plakson's attorney.

While Plaskon is being tried as an adult, his attorney said it is unclear if he understands the full ramifications of what he has done. He is being held at a center for young offenders, where he remains on suicide watch.

Plakson was joined in court by an uncle who is acting as a guardian. Defense attorneys said Plaskon's parents have been in seclusion.

"All of their hearts are broken," Meehan said. "How deeply grieved they are of the loss of this young lady's life."

Neither defense attorneys nor the prosecutor would comment on the motive nor confirm the theory that Plaskon was upset at Sanchez for turning down his invitation to the junior prom, which was to be held the night the stabbing took place.

"They're going to proceed on their theories, the state will continue to investigate it," said State's Attorney Kevin Lawlor. "It will be up to me to make a determination as to what I think really happened here and to prosecute the case appropriately."

Sanchez's friends stood in line Thursday night to pay their final respects to the class president and honors student, and remember her for warm and vibrant personality.

a private burial was held Friday.
