PHOENIX - A pilot in a glider died shortly after takeoff Saturday afternoon in Aguila, according to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office.

The Sheriff’s Office says that the glider became disconnected from its tow plane about 100 feet in the air. It is not known how or where the disconnect happened. Afterward, the pilot banked the glider, it stalled out, and nosedived into the ground.

The pilot has been identified as 61-year-old Ret. Major General Robert Knauff.
