Woman shoots intruder after alleged assault

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (KSAZ) - A homeowner fought back when she shot a man who allegedly broke into her home and attacked her with a gardening tool.

Phoenix Police escorted a 47 year-old woman into a crisis van after she opened fire on a suspect who attacked her.

"He had blood all over here, so I don't know if that was caused by gun shot, but he was a tall skinny kid, and he was Caucasian," said a neighbor.

Neighbors say the woman lives alone; she is a recent widow.

According to police the resident called 911 around 7:30 AM saying someone was inside her home.

Police say as she ran for cover the suspect chased her down possibly with a garden tool and assaulted her by striking her in the head and face; that's when she shot him.

"I know she said because she lives alone that she is afraid of something like this happening," said Hector Heredia.

Police say the suspect knocked on the front and side doors before breaking in through the back door that what happened could have ended a lot worse.

"I would say that anytime someone is in your house, they've assaulted you, broken into your house, and assaulted you, you would say she appears to have been in the right at this point," said Phoenix Police spokesperson Tommy Thompson.

The woman suffered minor injuries and is expected to be ok. The suspect was rushed to a nearby hospital where police expect him to survive.

"I think it was good she's gotta do what's he's gotta do to protect herself," said a neighbor.
