Group raises awareness about kidnapped girls

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (KSAZ) - It's a developing story making international headlines: the terrorist group Boko Haram has released video of nearly 300 kidnapped Nigerian school girls.

Boko Haram's leader says his group will not free the young girls until the Nigerian government releases his detained fighters.

The kidnappings have sparked international outrage.

Last week, First Lady Michelle Obama posted a photo to Twitter, holding a sign with #BringBackOurGirls.  Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has been vocal about the issue and rallies are being held in several states, including Arizona.

A group outside the Arizona State Capitol wore bright red shirts with the hashtag seen around the world: #BringBackOurGirls.  Their message is loud and clear.

"It's important because they're children.  It's important because they need us," said Kathryn McKinney, a rally participant.

These valley residents, some with ties to Nigeria, expressed their disappointment with the government there and how it is handling the kidnapping of more than 200 young girls.

"This is a picture of what could come to any shore in the world.  We're no longer an individual community, we are a global community," said Renee Huff, another rally participant.

Bring Back Our Girls may seem like a simple request, but the people who participated in Monday's rally say there's more to this than what happened.

"This is all linked.. Boko Haram is linked to Al-Qaeda in the Middle East, it's linked to Al-Qaeda elsewhere, it's linked to Al-Qaeda in east Africa, they're all a network working together," said rally organizer Foster Okoli.

The leader of the Nigerian Islamist rebel group, Boko Haram, according to this group, has offered to release the girls in exchange for prisoners. And they won't rest until they can bring those girls home.
