Ione Skye: My Yiddish Vacation

Posted: Updated:

"When I would go with my grandparents it was very different, to me exotic..."

That's Ione Skye telling Steve and Lisa about what inspired her new children's book, "My Yiddish Vacation." It's based on her childhood experiences of spending vacations with her Jewish grandparents. Ione talked about how much fun it was learning all of the "fun words" from her grandparent's Yiddish language.

"It was a very cozy scene being with my grandparents, there was something warm, just the characters these kind of Eastern European Jewish New York characters that captured my imagination, I really loved hanging out with all these old people and when they retired I would just sit with them and listen to my grandparents talking."

Ione says as she got older, she didn't use the words as often...but once in a while...

"I don't use that many words anymore, I don't know if I ever really used them that much...and it's funny when they come out of my mouth I go 'oh there's one I still use.'"

Ione will have a book signing and reading at Barnes & Noble at The Grove Tuesday night at 7PM.

"My Yiddish Vacation" is out now.
