State Route 89A to be shut down May 27 to July 2

PHOENIX (KSAZ) - It's coming: triple digit heat. 104 degrees is expected in the near future and if you're thinking of heading up north to cool off in a few weeks, a major highway closure could hurt your travel plans.

State Route 89A from Sedona to Flagstaff will be shut down May 27 to July 2.  That's just north of Slide Rock.  It's a 3.5 mile closure.

"We do rely on drive by traffic, particularly that time of year," said Chris Bosselman of the Junipine Resort.

Businesses in Oak Creek Canyon worry the 89A closure could have a huge impact on business during one of their busiest times of the year.

"A lot of times as soon as people see these ADOT signs, they say hey, this is the last thing I want to deal with when I'm on vacation and so they're going to turn around not knowing the road is open all the way though every canyon business," said Bosselman.

Only a 3.5 mile stretch of 89A will be shut down for repaving and rockfall mitigation.  You'll only be affected if you plan on driving up 89A from Sedona to Flagstaff or south on 89A from Flagstaff to Sedona.  Everyone will have to take Interstate 17 instead.

"They really need a dry, warm month to be able to do this work, so you're basically looking at June or September.. October.  I think for a lot us, the economic impact in the fall would be more substantial than it would be in June and so if this project has to be done, our preference would be summer reference the fall season," said Bosselman.

Hotels, restaurants and stores in Oak Creek are hoping people will look past the construction signs and drive into town.  They say visitors might be pleasantly surprised.

"This might be in fact a great time to actually come out and visit the canyon because the traffic might actually be lower," said Bosselman.
