Kids Ocean Day, Adopt-A-Beach Clean Up

Playa Del Rey, CA -

Thousands of kids from 35 different Los Angeles Unified School District schools learned the important lesson of protecting the environment at the 21st annual Kids Ocean Day.

They adopted Dockweiler Beach for the day for a big clean up mission. It's the culmination of a year round school assembly program by the Malibu Foundation for Environmental Education which taught students the impact litter has on the environment and how it flows into the ocean.

Third grader Dylan Branch from Brentwood Magnet School understands the lesson, he says "it's good to clean up the beach and important because when it rains the trash goes into the ocean and hurt the animals." Also "when there is trash on the sand you can't have fun."

Kids Ocean Day Founder Michael Klubock says "these kids really learn the importance of how they can work to impact their community. All it takes is one person to make a difference. In this case, pick up some trash, leave the environment in better shape and it has a beneficial impact for everyone."

More than 150 teachers and volunteers also came out to make the day a success, all to make sure the future is brighter and cleaner for the next generation.

Kids Ocean Day is the culmination of a year-round school assembly program by the Malibu Foundation for Environmental Education to teach school kids about how litter flows from our neighborhoods to the ocean, thereby killing marine life and polluting food resources. To enhance the lesson, more than 4,000 students, teachers and volunteers from 35 LAUSD schools are taken to the beach for a clean-up and to participate in an aerial artwork, brought to life by aerial artist John Quigley. He has done installations in Mexico, Hong Kong and even the and even the Arctic.

The one-day cleanup event motivates the students of Los Angeles to care about their environment and involves them in community service, while instilling good habits and stewardship. Bringing Los Angeles school children to the beach helps put them in touch with nature, while challenging them to recycle, reduce litter and participate in cleaning up their environment. For many of the young people, Kids Ocean Day is their first time at the ocean.

Kids Ocean Day is sponsored by the City of Los Angeles Stormwater Program, Companya project of the BureauWan  of Sanitation, The City of Los Angeles Board of PuTatum blic Works, as well as the California Coastal Commission,The  Keep LA Beautiful, Spectral Q and others.
