Police: Camden Woman Buried Alive, 2 Suspects Charged

Posted: Updated:
CAMDEN, N.J.- The Camden County Prosecutor’s Office has charged two men with the murder of a 41-year-old Camden woman.

On Thursday, both suspects were arraigned in a Camden County courtroom.

Family of Fatima Perez left court emotionally distraught after the arraignment.

Perez, reported missing Monday, was found dead Wednesday after investigators say she was buried alive in a shallow grave in Monroe Township.

The prosecution described what happened as torture.

"It's a heinous crime that they committed, and in New Jersey if you commit crime like that you face life without parole, as you should," said Camden County Assistant Prosecutor Christine Shah.

Investigators identified 57-year old Ramon Ortiz and 36-year-old Carlos Alicea-Antonetti as the men accused of killing Perez and say the men gave detailed lengthy confessions.

Investigators say the victim had $8,000 dollars in cash on her when the suspects picked her up from her home on North 41st in Camden to go buy a car.

According to investigators, she was tied up and duck-tape was placed over her mouth and eyes.

"They had a verbal argument which he claimed eventually resulted in Ms. Perez falling out of his van and claimed that the fall caused her some injury but she got back into his van," said Shah.

Prosecutors say Alicea-Antonetti then picked up defendant Ortiz who allegedly claims the victim by then was tied up and lying on the floor of the van.

"Alicea-Antonetti admitted that he and Ortiz tied up Ms. Perez and placed duck tape over her mouth and her eyes. He stated that he and Ortiz traveled southbound from this area to a wooded location where Ortiz dug a hole in a wooded area. Alicea-Antonetti admitted to detectives that they put Ms. Perez in a hole, they poured lime on her and buried here. He advised detectives that she was still alive when they buried her," said Shah.

As family left court they did not want to talk. Perez's mother and siblings cried hearing the details of the horrific death. Fox 29 was told Perez also has two children.

Police say based on the information they received it seems that Perez was buried after dark Monday night.

Investigators say a tip led them a motel on Route 38 in Cherry Hill where they found one of the suspects in a room and the other walking nearby. One of them allegedly had $7,000 in cash on him. Bail was set for both men at $5 million full cash.
