Police: Student Charged After Gun Found In Locker

Posted: Updated:
Wilmington,Del.-  Scary moments at a Wilmington school after a loaded gun is found in a student’s locker.

A 15-year-old now faces charges after Moyer Academy was placed on lockdown Wednesday afternoon.

Police said they’re unsure how the boy got the gun and why he brought it to school.

While some parents are happy with the way the school handled things, not everyone feels the same way.

“It’s scary because a lot of shootings have been happening recently, shootings and stabbings within the school. So, it’s very scary," parent Lotoya Teat said.

Teat said she’s not only frightened a student brought a gun to her son’s school, but also frustrated she had to find out about it, through the news.

“They claim they called me, which I didn’t get the phone call," she said.

Police said they found a loaded .32 caliber revolver, a BB gun and $40 worth of marijuana inside a 15-year-old’s locker at Moyer Academy.

“They were wanding the kids down, they were wanding them right there," 6th grader Najih Hassanew said.

Students at the high school said everyone remained calm.

“Nobody was scared. Everybody was cool calm and collected, went on like nothing ever happened," 10th grader Quashie Smith-Ross said.

There was a much different reaction from the middle schoolers across the street.

“Yeah we were scared. We thought somebody was going to try and shoot up the school," Hassanew said.

The school issued this statement, in part:

“The weapons were not, at any time, out of the locker. At no time was anyone in danger.”

“Luckily it seems to be one of those cases where he didn’t intend on harming anybody, again there’s no threats made, but he still brought a loaded firearm to school and that’s always a dangerous situation.” Corporal Mark Ivey of the Wilmington Police Department said.

Police said another student overheard talk about the weapon at the small charter school, prompting the lockdown.

"The student first of all deserves some credit here. The student saw something wrong, reported it to a teacher and the teacher then followed her policies and procedures and notified other staff members to make sure the school locked the area down and contacted police," Ivey said.

Smith-Ross said the 15-year-old suspect kept to himself.

“He didn’t talk to nobody so you wouldn’t think he has problems with nobody. So that was a shocker.”

Some parents would to like more security put in place, so something like this won’t happen again.

“Some schools, they got metal detectors out there, so I hope that’s some of the steps that they take, some extra security in here," Devin Ross said.

“I may be naïve or dumb but because of all the problems going on in the schools and kids always coming to school with something they have no business coming in here with, I thought all the schools had that," Rena Encarnacion said.

The 15-year-old student is not being identified because he’s a minor.

He was arraigned and was behind bars Thursday at the New Castle County Detention Center.
