Isaac Kolstad remains in critical condition after Mankato assault

Posted: Updated:
MANKATO, Minn. (KMSP) -

The family of former Minnesota State University, Mankato linebacker Isaac Kolstad updated his condition following the injuries he sustained in a bar-close assault that has former Gopher quarterback Philip Nelson and a 21-year-old from St. Peter facing felony charges.

Isaac remains in critical condition at Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato with severe brain swelling and bruising. His injuries have caused increased pressure within his skull to life-threatening levels.

“We want to thank everyone for their support and ongoing efforts to help our family. We cannot begin to express our gratitude. As Mankato natives, we are so proud of our community and are incredibly inspired by the things going on around us. Your continued prayers and encouragement are needed and greatly appreciated.”- Isaac Kolstad family statement

In order to relieve the swelling, he required emergency surgery on his brain early Tuesday morning in which he had a significant amount of his brain tissue that was no longer viable removed.

Despite the surgery's success, the swelling remains significant leaving him at a high risk for further injury and the potential for additional surgery. Kolstad continues to be in a medically-induced coma, utilizing life support to keep him breathing. Friday, Kolstad underwent his second major surgery -- a tracheotomy operation to help manage his breathing while on life support.
