Allegiant Air flight evacuated over smell

Posted: Updated:
MESA, Ariz. - An Allegiant Air flight had to be evacuated on the runway at a Mesa airport after the pilot reported a strange smell.

Federal Aviation Administration officials say Flight 142 was getting ready for a 1:30 p.m. Monday departure from Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport to Wichita, Kansas.

After the pilot smelled some sort of chemical, the plane was quickly evacuated with 162 passengers using inflatable slides.

"On comes the pilot and he yells 'Evacuate, evacuate,' and so we pull the door, push open the door. I actually almost jumped out of the plane before the slide ejected because I didn't know what else to do, but then all the exits were open, but then everyone started evacuating," said Crystal Hong.

No injuries were reported and the FAA says it's investigating the cause of the smell.

Allegiant Airlines offered passengers a refund on their airfare and a $100 voucher for going through the ordeal.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
