Wrong way crashes: What do you do if you see a car coming at you on the freeway?

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (KSAZ) - Dash camera footage released by the Michigan State Police and posted on You Tube shows a wrong way driver on US 131.

That wrong-way driver slammed into another motorist seconds later, killing himself and the other driver in a fiery crash.

So what do you do if you see headlights driving straight at you on the freeway by a wrong-way driver?

"And it takes a while before it registers, and you say oh my god, there is somebody on the wrong side of the road," said Larry Malkin.

Larry Malkin's with the Institute for Driver's Safety in Tempe. He trains young drivers the rules of the road and how to survive emergencies like wrong-way drivers.

He advises the safest lane to drive in is the middle one.

"After thinking of all the accidents that happen, I drive in the middle lane, not in the far left lane because that seems to be where the accidents are occurring. It seems that people get on the freeway and do not realize they are going the wrong way," he said.

If you see the headlights of a wrong way driver coming at you, he has this advice. "My advice would be to pull as far to the right and slow down or get on the shoulder and stop," he said.

The three wrong way crashes in the valley have happened in the early morning hours after 1 in the morning.

You could avoid the freeways during certain hours, but it's not a solution for everyone. "It's not realistic to avoid the freeway, but I do think that your awareness should be heightened at those hours, it seems to me that on weekends, Fridays, and Saturdays there are more intoxicated drivers. I definitely stand by my thoughts of staying out of the HOV lane if possible," said Malkin.

Malkin also says that is to look far ahead on the freeway, if you think you see a wrong-way driver, don't spend precious seconds thinking it cannot be. Start to get out of the way quickly.
