Mesa Police officers shoot man who fired gun at them

Posted: Updated:
MESA, Ariz. - A suspect was hospitalized after opening fire on Mesa police at a strip mall near Stapley and McKellips.

Mesa officers were called to the strip mall where someone saw a man in the back of a business with a "long gun".

Police say they gave the suspect commands to drop his weapon, but he wouldn't lower his weapon or talk to them.

While officers were talking to the suspect, he allegedly fired at least two rounds and hit the back wall of a vacant office building.

Two officers responded by firing at the suspect. He was hit and taken into custody.

He was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

No officers were injured in the shooting.

Police haven't been able to interview or determine why the suspect allegedly initiated the incident.
