Alternative band KONGOS has deep roots in the valley

PARADISE VALLEY, Ariz. - This song "Come With Now" topped the billboard alternative charts this spring, and the brothers behind the beats created the hit right here in the valley.

In fact, the basement of their Paradise Valley home serves as a recording studio.

"Ya know when we recorded it, Johnny the accordion player wrote it, and he brought a demo down to the studio, and we started listening to it and trying to figure out how we can produce it as a band," said Jesse.

That was in 2007 the same year the four brothers Johnny, Jesse, Dylan and Danny decided to turn their talents into a career. They spent their childhood playing instruments and listening the music their dad and songwriter John Kongos played for them.

"Anything from opera ,to classic rock, to rap, and techno. It really didn't matter basically if it was good music he played it to us," said Dylan Kongos.

"Although we have a special love for certain african music, it's mostly the music that was lying around the house that influenced us," said Danny Kongos.

"It takes a few years for it to click in your head, this is fun, rewarding, everything about it's enjoyable," said Johnny Kongos.

Instead of leaving for Los Angeles or New York to work on their record "Lunatic," the brothers stayed in the city they call home.

"In Phoenix we're kind of out of here on our own, and I think that was a good thing because we just hold ourselves up in the studio and did our own thing, and weren't too concerned with what was going on in the fashionable music market," said Jesse Kongos.

The band will be touring next year and a half going to west coast, Canada, and Europe. The band will spend seven months with the Kings of Leon this summer in the United States and in Europe with One Republic. The first stop for their tour is in Seattle starting Thursday. They will be back in the valley at Tempe Beach Park in September.
