Kachina Village prepares for possible fire evacuation

Posted: Updated:
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - The Slide Fire has prompted authorities to issue a pre-evacuation notice to 3,200 Kachina Village residents. The notice tells residents to be ready to go in case the fire jumps fire lines.

Rachel Edelstein raked the pine needles around her Kachina Village Home. She's hoping that if the fire approaches her property there will be no fuel to feed it.

"It could come up the ravine, that's a straight shot through Forrest Highlands and 89A, an ember could fly over, that's why we should have done this last month," said Edelstein.

And like all of their neighbors who were given the pre-evacuation notice they are packed and ready to leave.

"We packed up everything, cats secured inside, we are ready to go," she said.

White smoke on Thursday was thick black smoke on Wednesday when residents decided to pack up.

Everywhere you look there are trailers and trucks filled with what they need to evacuate. Most of their neighbors have already gone.

Jim Johnson left his Phoenix home to check on his home in Flagstaff.

"We are worried but not panicking. We've got a few things in the truck, we can go in 10 or 15 minutes. We will stay until we have to leave," said Johnson.

But he says it's a sad sight watching the fire burn and not being able to stop it.

"It's pretty deserted, I passed one truck when I came in," he said.

A police officer suggested Paul Donnley leave the area as ash started to fall on the neighborhood.

"It's kind of the peril of living on the edge of a forest. We all knew this could happen and so far we've been lucky," said Donnely.

Forest Highlands is next to Kachina Village, those homeowners have also been ready to evacuate their homes as well.
