Arizona inmate charged in 1980 murder

Posted: Updated:

PHOENIX (AP) - Authorities have charged a 60-year-old man already serving time with the decades-old murder of a Phoenix woman.

Phoenix police say Arlie Tubbs was booked Thursday on one count of first-degree murder in the 1980 death of Matha Chesney.

Sgt. Steve Martos says cold case detectives re-tested evidence last year.

He says they then gathered enough to indict Tubbs, who was on probation at the time of the crime.

Police say Chesney was strangled in her south Phoenix home sometime between Aug. 31 and Sept. 4 of that year.

Martos says Tubbs was arrested back then but released due to lack of evidence.

State Department of Corrections officials say Tubbs has been in a Florence prison on charges of a dangerous drug violation and theft for means of transportation.
