HIGHLAND PARK, Mich. (WJBK) -- Buckle up or pay up.  That's the message police are sending this holiday weekend.

Patrols all over Michigan are conducting "Click it or Ticket" campaigns  with extra patrols through June 1.

Along Woodward Avenue in Highland Park today, officer gave out stacks of tickets.  They pulled people over to check their seat belts, but found other problems in some instances including, drunk drivers, drivers without licenses or insurance, and drivers with warrant out for them.

Last year, seat belt usage in Michigan was 93 percent. However, despite hig hight use, nearly half of people killed in traffice crashes are unbuckled.

Michigan law requires drivers and front seat passengers to be buckled up.  Passengers under 16-years-old must be buckled at all times.
