Man drowns trying to swim across Scorpion Bay

Posted: Updated:
A 38-year-old man died Saturday afternoon trying to swim across Scorpion Bay. The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office says the man began to struggle about halfway across and went under.

MCSO identified the drowning victim as Nelson Gomez Rivas of Phoenix.

The victim’s wife asked others on the shore to rescue him. They were able to get him out of the water and began performing CPR. He was flown to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The sheriff’s office estimates he was under water for about 5 to 7 minutes. At this time impairment does not appear to be a factor in his death.
