MARICOPA, Ariz. - A 41-year-old Maricopa police officer allegedly assaulted his wife and his 14-year-old son early Sunday morning.

Maricopa police say Joshua Boyd pushed his wife, causing her to fall on the floor and hurt her wrist.

The 14-year-old boy was reportedly assaulted when he tried to protect his mother.

Both the woman and the boy had minor injuries.

According to police, Boyd took a broom and hit a separation gate until it was bent and broken. After the gate was damaged, he reportedly broke the broom over his knee.

Boyd was arrested and booked in jail on charges of aggravated assault, Assault, Disorderly Conduct and Criminal Damage.

Police say alcohol is a factor in the case.

Boyd will be on paid administrative leave during the investigation.

He has been with the Maricopa Police Department since 2007 and works with the state's stolen vehicle task force.
