PHOENIX (KSAZ) - An emergency message issued this weekend from the U.S. Consulate in Nogales, Mexico has some wondering about the safety of the border town.

Just hours after that emergency warning was issued, the body of a young Tucson man was found shot to death in his car on a highway outside of Nogales.

The warning issued Sunday from the U.S. consulate was brief and did not provide any details.

"Due to credible threat information the consulate urges U.S. citizens to take highest precautions regarding personal safety in and around Nogales."

Here's some advice from a security consultant on how to stay safe in and around Nogales.

"Don't go.  Three things you can if you chose to go: Number one, go in a group. Number two, stay in downtown shopping district.  Number three, leave before it gets dark," said E. Dwayne Tatalovich of Tatalovich and Associates.

Tatalovich says he loves Nogales, but Nogales isn't what it used to be because of the drug cartels.

"If you go, you assume risk and the risk in Mexico can be very severe because the consequence could be your life."

On Tuesday in Phoenix, the consul general of Mexico in Nogales was attending an event about workers pay and rights.  We asked him about the emergency message from the U.S. Consulate in Nogales and he said there's no problem.

"As far as I see, people are traveling to Nogales, Sonora on a daily basis.  People are going there for medical reasons or business.." he said.

The consulate of Nogales tells me it is business as usual at the border town since the emergency message was issued Sunday.

Nogales is a popular destination for medical tourists as they've come to be called.  People who flock to the pharmacies there for prescription medications at a fraction of the cost.  Many also go to border towns for medical and dental procedures.

It's a thriving business and if Nogales were viewed as unsafe it could be quite a hit to that industry.
