Suspect shot after allegedly running at police with screwdrivers

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (KSAZ) - Police shot at a 26-year-old man after he was allegedly acting violently and then ran toward police holding screwdrivers.

Police say officers arrived to a medical office building near 19th Avenue and Missouri for reports of a man acting violently and erratically, throwing chairs and taking off his clothes.

Officers say at least one witness told them he said he wanted to kill himself.

Another witness reportedly said the suspect charged at him with two screwdrivers.

Officers found the suspect walking on the side of the road. They say he was still holding two screwdrivers and had another sharp object.

Police say he ignored several verbal commands and heavy traffic made the situation especially dangerous.

Three officers discharged their tasers at the man, but they weren't effective.

According to police, the man, who was now in the crosswalk and seemed agitated by the tasers, ran toward an officer with the screwdrivers raised in both hands.

An officer fired one shot, hitting the man in the chest.

Despite being hit, the man continued to be combative and resisted officers as they attempted to handcuff him.

The man was taken to a hospital and is expected to survive his injury.

No others were injured.

After he is released from the hospital, the man will be booked on aggravated assault on a heath care provider, aggravated assault on a police officer, resisting arrest and criminal damage.

Police will released the man's name when he is booked.
