No charges, Shattuck-St. Mary's sexual assault case remains a mystery

Posted: Updated:

With finals over, and graduation set for Friday, the idyllic Shattuck-St. Mary's campus had that uneasy feeling of unfinished business.

And so it is with the criminal investigation into the alleged sexual assault of a female student by three of her male classmates, including a standout on the school's legendary hockey team, which just last month won their record ninth national championship.

Whatever occurred happened at a home off-campus, the night of April 26. The victim went to the hospital emergency room the next day, where nurses collected evidence and called police.

But the victim refused to file a police report.

The Faribault police chief told Fox 9 News he wanted to make sure the alleged victim wasn't being pressured, by anyone in anyway, not to say what happened. So detectives contacted her on three occasions this month, until she finally called them back.

According to that police report, obtained by Fox 9 News, the victim who is now back home, out of state, said "nobody has tried to prevent her…" from reporting the sexual assault. And that "family and friends have encouraged her.." but she is "still reluctant at this point."

Why? She won't say.

Police won't speculate.

And the school had no comment.

Leaving a mystery that may linger long past graduation.
