New Changing Hands Bookstore location opens; occupies renovated Beef Eaters space

PHOENIX (KSAZ) - Remember the old Beef Eaters restaurant on Camelback and 3rd Avenue?  Many people in the valley have memories there.

The restaurant shut down years ago, but it has been restored and a local business has opened a second location in the renovated space.

Changing Hands Bookstore has been in Tempe since 1974 and they received contributions from the community to open their new charming location here, complete with a bar.

Beef Eaters opened in the 1960s, but for seven years, it sat vacant -- now renovated and called The Newton after Beef Eaters' founder Jay Newton.

Gayle Shanks and her co-owners' history in the space let them know it was the perfect spot for the second location of their small business -- Changing Hands Bookstore.

"Beef Eaters was a place that my family would have family celebrations and I am not alone in that," she said.

Since last November, the community contributed $91,000 online to help them expand beyond the shop they started in Tempe 40 years ago.

"The kids' section in this store and in Tempe is about 25 percent of the space," said Shanks.  "That's how committed we are to kids and reading and books for children."

Changing Hands sells one of the biggest sections of children's books in the southwest and an impressive selection on every topic from teen to politics and religion to fiction in a setting with rich history.

The new shop is complete with a bar called First Draft where you can get wine, beer, coffee and even food for a good cause.

"The other thing that we're really excited about is that we have partnered with the autistic research group in town.  They have told us that the adults with autism are great cooks," said Shanks.

From the selection of books and beers to children's toys and unique gifts, the independent store says it's all about giving the community a place to gather.

The store's hours are 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sundays.
