Posted: Updated:

The Red Cross is helping fourteen people find new places to stay after at least two apartments were damaged by fire early Sunday.

Phoenix Fire crews responded to the fire on Sunday at about 3 a.m. after receiving several 911 calls from people at an apartment complex near 21st Avenue and Indian School.  Family members say the woke up to discover their front door was on fire.  Adults in the home say they managed to get all the children out of the home through a back window on the ground floor.

Flames spread along the stairwell to a third-story apartment, where there were initial reports a family was trapped.  Fire crews on scene had to carry one person down on a ladder.

Fire crews are investigating what sparked the flames.  Red Cross workers say they are helping a total of four adults and nine children who were all living in the apartments near Indian School and I-17.
