Vigils, marches planned in protest of Walmart wages

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (KSAZ) - Dozens of Walmart employees are holding a demonstration in Paradise Valley to demand the right to speak out for better wages and conditions.

The groups are called "Our Walmart" and "Working Mother Employed by Walmart."

They want to get support for local Walmart employees and say the company is illegally trying to silence them.

The groups held a march and vigil on Monday night and are continuing to hold events in the valley this week.

They say they're angry that Walmart is taking disciplinary action against their coworkers who are trying to put an end to the company's low pay and erratic scheduling.

"I'm afraid for the future of my kids growing up, living in a world where there's no middle class, in a world where they're living in poverty. We shouldn't live in a world like that, especially in this country. It's supposed to be a land of opportunity," said Anthony Goytia, with Our Walmart.

Walmart is one of the biggest companies in the world and makes nearly $16 billion a year in profits.

The workers FOX10 spoke to say that they like their jobs and they're not looking for huge pay increase. They just want a livable wage and to be treated better.
