Three people died Sunday in two separate drownings on Lake Lanier. One of the victims was a teenager, according to authorities.
Rangers say the first drowning happened at about 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon, involving a father and his son. That incident happened near Three Sisters Island.
Investigators say the father, Leonel Torres, and his son Elton, 15, were playing catch when their ball went into the water. The teen went in after it, and went under the surface. His father then tried to save him. But according to Scott Cagle of the Hall Co. Fire Department, "He also became distressed and both went under and neither one resurfaced".
The second drowning happened about four hours later. In that incident, Beto Silva, 20, drowned near the Old Federal swimming area.
Authorities say Silva and three friends were walking along an underwater sandbar that extends from the shore to a small island. Silva apparently stepped off the sandbar into water that's twenty to thirty feet deep. He did not know how to swim, investigators say. His brother tried to save him, but could not.
