Sheriff: Baby killed by family dog in Davisburg

Posted: Updated:
DAVISBURG, Mich. (WJBK) - Authorities say a two-and-a-half-month-old baby boy in Davisburg has died after being attacked by the family dog.

"All I remember is hearing her horrific scream," says neighbor Skye McCann. "I've been thinking about it ever since. It has not stopped. I've even dreamed that everything was going to okay and it turns out the worse."

Police say a two-and-a-half-month-old baby boy was attacked by the family dog while sitting on his uncle's lap.

It happened so quick. No one saw it coming.

"I remember back each time we had our children brand new at home and you're so excited and people are coming to see, and that's what was going on here. You had an uncle that had come into town to see a new baby and all that excitement and the just whole euphoria of the experience, and then this, is a tragedy," says Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard.

It happened at a home in the eight thousand block of Tindall Road in Davisburg.

The family had owned the dog, a Catahoula cattle hound, for about two years. That breed of dog is known for hunting and herding.

We're told it did bite a neighbor in the past and did attack another dog, but nothing close to this.

"The father was so busy trying to wrestle the baby out of the mouth of the dog he ended up needing stitches in his hands. So, the dog wouldn't release," says Bouchard. "Pets are animals and they may see this baby coming newly into the house either as a toy, could be about the size of their toy, or as a territorial challenge, that it's something else coming into their territory challenging for the attention of the adult."

Despite efforts by deputies on the scene who performed CPR on the infant and emergency crews at two different hospitals, nothing could be done to save the infant.

Animal control officers have since taken the dog from the home and it will be put down.

It is a heartbreaking story for the family involved and those who tried so hard to help. FOX 2's Robin Murdoch reports this was the family's first child.

"I feel really bad for them and what they're going to have to go through. I know it's life changing to experience losing someone you love," says McCann.

The sheriff tells me this appears to be a horrible accident but it is standard procedure to send a report to the prosecutors office for review. Once the investigation is complete, Murdoch reports Bouchard does not expect any charges to be filed.
