New fire training center dedicated to pioneer in modern firefighting

PHOENIX (KSAZ) - The new Phoenix Fire Training Center has been up and running for months, but it didn't have a name or dedication. That changed Tuesday morning.

A bronze sculpture is the first thing you seen when you drive into the new training center in South Phoenix. It honors firefighters everywhere.

Dario Travani is one of those firefighters; his name is now on the training center. It's a perfect fit; he was known for making sure firefighters were well trained and had good equipment, he died in 2007.

"He was really an innovator in how modern day fire departments fight fires, and the way things happened a hundred years ago are so very different," said Deputy Chief Chris Ketterer.

Friends and family showed up early for the dedication of the training center. It's new name and bronze statute by artist Tyson Snow in front of the building.

Firefighters gave the artist his inspiration.

"When I was here it was really hot, they were running, climbing, you name it, in 70 lbs of gear, what they were doing was incredible," he said.

Many of Travani's tactics are being used by firefighters across the country.

Travani also mentored retired Fire Chief Bob Kahn and Dennis Compton.
