NEW JERSEY (MYFOXNY.COM) -

Dozens of heavily armed police officers from several departments swarmed Hoboken and Weehawken Tuesday evening after a 911 call claimed a sniper was on the roof of a building near the Lincoln Tunnel.

Weehawken police notified the Port Authority police that the 911 caller said the sniper was on the roof of the Dykes Lumber building, which overlooks the entrance to the tunnel.

The Port Authority shut down the tunnel while police investigated. Police also closed several streets in the area.

But a police helicopter that flew over the area didn't find anything.

Another emergency call prompted a huge police response to a Hudson-Bergen Light Rail train nearby. Someone reported a man with a gun on board. Video from SkyFoxHD showed many police vehicles and officers outside the train, which was stopped at a railroad crossing.

MyFoxNY.com producer Kathy Carvajal, who lives nearby, witnessed the flurry of police activity both at the tunnel and at the light rail tracks from her balcony 20 stories up.

"I see heavily armed cops en masse travel towards the train and I heard one of them say 'Come out with your hands up,'" Carvajal said. "And I'm high up, I couldn't believe I could hear it."

Just after 8 p.m., police were seen allowing passengers to re-board the train, which departed soon after.

Police finished their search and investigation, reopening many of the local streets by about 8:10 p.m.

The Boys and Girls Club of Newark seems like the last place you'd expect to find the daughter of hip hop royalty. But when it comes to inspiring young girls, Angela Simmons, daughter of Rev. Run of Run DMC, believes in the old adage "each one, teach one." While it may seem like she had a silver spoon in her mouth, she knows the importance of giving back.

Several beaches on the New Jersey and New York coastlines are open to visitors but closed to swimming because of high surf and dangerous rip currents. The National Weather Service has issued a High Surf Advisory and Rip Current Statement for the area beaches because of the effects of Hurricane Cristobal, which is expected to track south and east of the Jersey shore through Thursday.
