Scores of trees vandalized on Southeast Side

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Police call it a bizarre act of vandalism. Scores of trees on the far Southeast Side hacked to pieces, and in some cases reduced to stumps.

"We planted it over here and it was doing just great," said John Pastirik. "It’s almost like seeing a dog hit by a car. It's like…they butchered these trees for no reason."

Neighbors woke up Wednesday morning to discover more than 50 trees and bushes hacked to pieces for several blocks along Avenue E and the Burnham Parkway bike trail. Some of the smaller trees had been cut in half just a few feet above the ground.

City work crews spent part of the day feeding the severed branches into a wood chipper, while residents surveyed the damage.

"It’s very sad. There's an older couple about a block away who planted some shrubs and trees in memory of some loved ones. And they were destroyed and those poor people were out there crying this morning. It's completely unnecessary," said Jeff Kudla.

Maria Rodriguez planted a tree in front of her home a year ago.

"I feel bad. I think it's only me, but I seen more trees. I said 'oh my God, who'd do that," asked Maria Rodriguez.

"I don't know [who would do something like this]. Someone who's not in their mind," said 10th Ward Alderman John Pope.

Pope also said he's asked Chicago police to launch an investigation.

"It’s offensive to the community. It's offensive to them. It represents nothing more than destruction and if we're to catch them, we expect to fully prosecute them," added Pope.

The Alderman said Chicago police expect to look at video from surveillance cameras in the area, including one security camera on a business right next to the bike path.
