'Carmageddon' on Kennedy approaching fast, begins Friday

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The warning signs are already flashing above the Kennedy Expressway for riders to be aware that ‘Carmageddon’ is coming.

If you are among those who usually use the I-90/94 expressway, your choices are to suck it up and ride the brakes through the painful construction, take the alternate routes on local streets, or sit back and cruise on a train.

FOX 32 News found Blue Line riders at the Rosemont stop who say they can arrive downtown in about 40 minutes. They said it’s fairly easy to get here from the suburbs by bus, or drive and park for $5. However, the train ride is only $2.25, and avoiding the frustration is priceless.

So, trains may be the way to go. The CTA is fully prepared to keep you moving with extra service, and longer trains.

If you’ve got coolers, lawn chairs or bikes, it’s no problem.

“We don't encourage you to bring your whole garage, but it’s very easy to grab your things and enjoy a great day at the festivals in downtown Chicago,” said Brian Steele, spokesman for the CTA.

Metra is also on board with getting you to your destination, hassle free.

The agency is adding more cars to the trains to accommodate passengers, and the regular weekend deal they offer just might entice you to become a regular rider. A weekend pass is just $7, and up to three children under the age of 11 can ride for free with a paying adult.
