Mayor Emanuel calls letters on Trump Tower 'awful'

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) - The huge silver letters that spell out 'TRUMP' on the Trump International Hotel and Tower have been hoisted.

There’s mixed reaction, though, to the giant sized name stamped on the building just above the Chicago River. From tweets to the streets, many people are talking about those five letters.

“It looks big just like his personality," said Heather Paschal of Houston.

The city zoning administrator approved it, as did the city council.

However, Mayor Emanuel told the Chicago Tribune the sign is "awful" and that the city is looking into options to take it down. Emanuel's office went farther in a statement:"Mayor Emanuel believes this is an architecturally tasteful building scarred by an architecturally tasteless sign."

But some Chicagoans said that they love the letters and think it is a beautiful way to represent the building.

"Some people have no idea this is the Trump building. I've been asked so many times so I think it's very cool," one person told FOX 32's Darlene Hill.

Donald Trump tweeted about the letters Thursday:"People are LOVING the Trump sign on the Chicago building. Big league tweets, letters and calls."

"I don't think it ruins the building, it's the only building that has a large sign on the front of it, so that makes it stick out and not really blend with the city," said Bernadette Wilson of California.

Many here in Chicago, though, feel the tower has been ruined with the latest addition; individuals from Blair Kamin -- a Pulitzer Prize winning writer for architectural criticism, whom Trump called "dopey" -- to the architect of the building itself who told the Tribune, "Just for the record, I had nothing to do with this sign!"

Trump fired back tweeting, "Before I bought the site, the Sun-Times had the biggest, ugliest sign Chicago has ever seen. Mine is magnificent and popular."

"It’s nothing compared to Vegas though or New York," said Lonnie Hirsch, also from California.

The Trump International Hotel and Tower released this statement Thursday afternoon:

It is a classy, elegant sign for a classy, elegant building. We are very proud to have the name go up and we have heard extremely positive feedback on the elegance of the sign from our staff, guests and visitors. In fact, I would not hesitate that everyone we have heard from loves the sign.

Mr. Trump had a vision for building a stunning skyscraper that has truly enhanced Chicago’s beautiful skyline. In so doing, he has also created hundreds of jobs and welcomed thousands of domestic and international visitors to the city — in direct support of Mayor Emanuel and Choose Chicago’s aggressive efforts to bolster international tourism.

Trump is a name recognized worldwide, and we see the sign's addition to the building not only as an identifier, but a draw for those who come to visit our world-class city and who know and respect the Trump name.

The 20 foot letters overlook the Riverwalk on the 96 story Trump International Hotel and Tower, as well as light up at night.
