2 charged in motorist beating after Detroit crash

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) -- Two Detroit men have been charged in the beating of a motorist after he collided with their vehicle while driving the wrong way on a city street.
The Wayne County prosecutor's office announced Thursday that 33-year-old driver Demond Williams 20-year-old passenger Toriano Williams are charged in the Saturday afternoon beating of 34-year-old Nate Szczerbinski of Grosse Pointe Park.
An arraignment was expected Thursday on charges of assault with intent to do great bodily harm and aggravated assault. Demond Williams also is charged with having an expired driver's license. Prosecutors say they're not aware if they have lawyers.

This attack is an eerie reminder of the Steve Utash beating back in April. The 54-year-old was beaten into a coma by a mob after stopping to help a 10-year-old boy who ran into the path of his truck.

Some are calling Szczerbinski's attack a hate crime but police are not jumping to conclusions.
Szczerbinski, who is white, told police several black men beat him and called him racially derogatory names. The prosecutor's office says it brought charges based on what could be proven in court.
