Chromebook Program to expand to other Pontiac classrooms

Posted: Updated:
PONTIAC, Mich. (WJBK) - It's the last day of school for many Pontiac Middle School students but it's just the beginning of something great. It's one of the only schools in the area to use what's known as the Chromebook Program.

"The kids are so excited about learning online. It has AI, which is artificial intelligence, so the students are able to reach the math and understand the math at their level and I am seeing great results in it," says Jillian Sisko.

A grant helped make the pilot program possible. It puts tablets with keyboards in the hands of students in the 7th through 9th grades.

"They are a good tool to use for math and other subjects of school," says Leng Yang, a Pontiac Middle School student.

"I think it's better because we can do learning on our without the whole class. So, if we are faster we can do it on our own; if we're slower we can do it on our own," says Carlos Alfaro.

"At first I had a bad grade and since I got on [the program] it really helped me improve. I raised [the grade] up to an A," says Shainiah Cooper.

Administrators say the students' behavior has also changed since the program first started in April. They are said to be more focused and genuinely more interested in their classwork, which is an academic win for this district working to rewrite its past.

"I have students who are struggling, they say, 'For the first time I really get it.' So, I'm excited about that," says Sisko.

The Chromebook Program is working so well here it is expanding. When students return to school in late August all of the kids in the middle school and high school will be using it.
