Sheriff Arpaio celebrates his 82nd birthday

PHOENIX (KSAZ) - Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio celebrated a birthday Friday; he turns 82 on Saturday.

That meant a lot of candles on his birthday cake, and just in case he couldn't blow them out the Phoenix Fire Department stood by ready with fire extinguishers.

There was ice cream and even punch, but what's a birthday party without cake.

"Is that an inmate baked cake," asked Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

The candles were lit and ready, not 82 of them, but enough to have the Phoenix Fire Department stop by.

"Can I use your extinguisher, you think I'm gonna blow all of these out, you're crazy," said Arpaio.

"You know what, I was thinking maybe you can smother it with your pink underwear," said a firefighter.

"Are you a real fireman," asked Arpaio.

Joking aside, it was time to blow out the candles.

"Who is gonna eat this after I blew on it, right, thank you," he said.

The cake was made by the jail chef, not any of the inmates.

"Not bad, whatever it is, it's right," said Arpaio.

So what does Arpaio have planned for his actual birthday? He says he'll be working.

"My wife and I will be working tomorrow on an operation, it's not in the hospital operation, so we'll be doing an enforcement operation tomorrow," he said.

And before the party came to an end the softer side of the Sheriff spoke from the heart.

"But I want to thank all my dedicated employees, because you keep my morale up, you keep me going, and that's very important for me personally," said Arpaio.

The Sheriff said he had a blood pressure test this week while at the Durango Jail. His pressure reading was 130/72, with those numbers he says he will be around for a while.
