Police: Man tried to abduct girl heading to school in Chicago Lawn

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) - A man followed and tried to abduct a young girl on her way to school Friday morning in the Southwest Side Chicago Lawn neighborhood.

About 7:30 a.m., the girl was walking in the 6300 block of South California Avenue, when a man riding a bicycle approached her and tried to talk with her, Chicago Lawn District police said in a community alert.

She ignored him, but he offered her a ride to school, police said. He also told the girl he had been watching her, and knew what she wore to school the day before.

He told the girl he would be waiting for at dismissal time, but he ran away when she asked a passerby to use a phone to report the man, police said.

He is described as a Hispanic man about 45 to 50 years old with acne and no facial hair, police said. He was riding a black and red mountain bike and wearing a white baseball cap, a white T-shirt with a face on the front and khaki pants.

Police are telling parents not to let children walk alone, and to call 911 to report any suspicious people or activities.

Anyone with information is asked to call Area Central detectives at (312) 747-8380.
