Bids for Obama Presidential Library due Monday

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

President Barack Obama still has about a year and a half in office. As time winds down, a list of states, including Illinois, are thinking about his presidential library.

The bids are due Monday and the University of Illinois-Chicago added a third potential site to its bid for the Obama Presidential Library. The Chicago Sun-Times reports the university said Monday that the new potential site includes 23 acres west of campus, an abandoned rail viaduct that Sears once used cuts through the site. A number of politicians were present at Monday's announcement.

Two previously announced potential locations are on campus.

The University of Chicago, Chicago State University, the Bronzeville neighborhood and a retail and residential development near Lake Michigan are also hoping to become the library's home.

The Obama Presidential Library would be the home to important historical papers that were part of Obama's tenure in office.

A grassroots group of about 100 people will also be submitting bids. They are looking for donations.

"We are looking for 10 million people worldwide to send us $99 so we can make this site available to showcase Chicago and to lift the community spirit," Paula Robinson with said.

Gov. Pat Quinn said an Obama presidential library should be in Chicago, but he doesn't have a favorite site.

The Chicago Democrat spoke to reporters after an unrelated event on Monday. Quinn said the sites that want the library should work together. He says having the library in Chicago would bring in jobs and boost tourism.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel hasn't picked his ideal site but says he'd like to see the library on Chicago's South Side, where he says it would have the most potential to spur development and jobs.

A panel of three people, along with the president and first lady, will make the final call on where the library will be located. The President will announce the site of the new library in 2015.
