Animal sanctuary seeking donations to help boxer with 12 lb tumor

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX, AZ - Myla is a 7 year-old boxer who suddenly found herself an orphan a week ago. The family who cared for her since she was a puppy surrendered her to Maricopa County Animal Care & Control.

She has since been picked up by a local rescue, but they need help raising money for Myla's surgery.

Myla is a friendly, fiesty, boxer-mix. The only thing wrong with her is a massive cancerous lump that weighs 12 pounds.

It's been growing for about a year and a week ago her owner's gave her up.

"Our understanding was they couldn't afford the cost to take this growth off," said Luisa Chocron with Forever Loved Pet Sanctuary.

"Realistically we are always full, but when they contacted us about her, and we saw the pictures, we just couldn't say no," said Chocron.

The surgery has been scheduled to remove the tumor, the cost of which is expected to run between $1,000 to $3,000.

The good news is the tumor doesn't seem to bother Myla, she's still a happy dog, when you touch it, it feel like a warm massive growth of tissue.

"It's really just a buildup of tissue, why it happened, we don't know," said Chocron.

And although Myla's growth may cause her to walk a little funny, the rescue believes once it is removed she'll be ready to start over with a new family.

"She should be a great addition to any family, and the previous owners did have children, so she's great with kids. She's been around other dogs, I believe cats as well, she's all around a really great dog," said Chocron.

Myla is scheduled to have surgery next Tuesday, once she recovers she will be put up for adoption.
