New look for Arizona driver's licenses starts today

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (KSAZ) - A big change is coming for Arizona drivers, new licenses.

The new licenses are now available, and they have new features to combat counterfeits.

It's out with the old and in with the new at the Arizona MVD offices. The State rolled out new licenses and identification cards.

"It looks good, there are double pictures and stuff on it, I like it," said a driver.

The new look is all for an important issue, preventing counterfeit and fraudulent cards.

"It's a very sophisticated design, and very sophisticated in a concept for what we have for a driver's license," said Harold Sanders with ADOT.

One thing you'll notice is a bigger picture.

"It's also a higher resolution for us to identify that it is a valid credential, and then we have a ghosting effect on the opposite side which shows that the two pictures should match," he said.

Gone away is the Grand Canyon background; instead you'll notice an intricate design, as well as a pinhole cutout of the state.

"You cannot create security features into a photo, so this process is the same way the U.S. Treasury does in making currency," said Sanders.

"I really do like it, I like the fact it has double pictures on it, and it tells you whether or not you're a donor up front," said Dawn Nixon.

The cards are not available the same day; instead you get a temporary license, and a permanent card will be mailed to you.

MVD is charging $12 to get a new license, and it takes up to 2 weeks to get the license mailed to you.
