Fallen Detroit Marine honored with Bronze Star

Posted: Updated:
WJBK - In a bittersweet ceremony Monday, a Detroit Marine was honored for his heroism in Afghanistan. The Marines awarded a Bronze Star to 23-year-old Marine Lance Corporal Steven Stevens who lost his life in combat.

On June 22, 2012 Stevens, who was a sweeper, was doing the same job he had done many times before. He was looking for underground explosives, when they were met with enemy fire. Helping guide the infantry, Stevens continued to do his job when he was killed with an RPG.

The ceremony on Monday was held at at Camp Pendleton in California with his wife and their two-year-old son accepting the award on his behalf.

Stevens wife says, "It warmed my heart to know that all of his work was honored, and not only that, but they took the time to let my family, all of us be a part of that.  That's a feeling I can't describe. Even though he never got to meet him, he'll be able to be proud of him, hold his head high, and know his dad was a hero."

The fallen Marine was awarded for showing the type of bravery Marines say can only come through brotherhood.

"The cohesion and how tight the Marines are and how close they are, that's what has helped the Marines deal with adversity," said Marine Staff Sgt. Lloyd Crabtree. Crabtree was there when Stevens was killed.

This day meant a lot not only to his family but also to his fellow Marines.

"I feel so much joy and pride," said Marine Cpl. Xavier Irizarry.
