Elderly, disabled residents want apartment air conditioning fixed

Posted: Updated:
WAYNE, Mich. (WJBK) - Those who will need air conditioning the most do not have it at the moment inside Newberry Square, a five-story building in downtown Wayne.

Seniors, disabled and low-income residents live there.

The temperature in Bonnie's third-floor apartment is the same as her age and the muggy temperature outside.

Amid her now ironic collection of penguins, a fan rotates to move air around.

It's not stifling, but neither is it comfortable.

Residents say they want to know why the unit on the roof can't be fixed more quickly, prioritized, before deadly summer heat arrives.

"They're waiting for parts, from what I understand," says Bonnie.

Management was off site when Fox 2 came in with our camera. Residents acknowledge the owner isn't ignoring them; they just want to know why it's taking so long.
