Pet Treat Makers Settled With Dog Owners: $6.5m

Posted: Updated:

Makers of chicken jerky treats made in China have a agreed to a multi-million dollar settlement with pet owners and now a local vet says American-made treats could be a a problem, too.

Let's jump back to 2007. That's when the FDA started warning pet owners about possible illnesses related to chicken jerky treats made in China. Even after extensive testing offered no answer for how these treats might make animals sick, two manufacturers have agreed to a $6.5m settlement.

Neither company involved - Nestle Purina nor Waggin' Train - admit any wrongdoing, but according to a class-action suit they have agreed to settle.

The FDA reports it has logged, so far, about 5,000 animal deaths they believe are connected to the Chinese-manufactured treats. Recently, big retailers Petco and Pet Smart said they are pulling made in China chicken jerky snacks.

The focus throughout this investigation has been on the Chinese treats, but the I-Team talked to a Decatur vet who says since pet owners have started using more American-made chicken jerky treats, they have started seeing dogs potentially sick from those, too. Dr. Stacy had one in the last week.

"I have spoken to some internal medicine specialists who've said that there is still a suspicion that jerky treats in general are not good," said Dr. Stacy Stacy of The Village Vets. "

Pet owners who believe their dogs were harmed by chicken jerky treats made by Nestle Purina or Waggin' Train can submit claims for compensation when that settlement is given the final go-ahead by the court.

So what do you feed a pet as a treat?  The vet says the kibble from their regular dog food is a great training treat. She also says dogs love cold snacks like frozen peas or corn. Real food that you'd eat.
